Already a gifted illustrator and cartoonist and just out of the Army after the war, young Guy Danella headed for New York City for his immersive baptism in the modernist movement lead by such notables as Alfred Stieglitz and Hans Hoffman. The baptism grew into an artistic commitment with studies with Joseph Albers at Syracuse University. Danella loved paint and all its technical possibilities from whimsical brush drawing to thick knife work impasto. His maturation into a personal style benefitted from his parallel running experience as an illustrator and animator where pictorial and narrative simplification were at play. A deep thinker Danella was well read in psychology and in painting his intuitive probing found abstract shapes that suggested humanity, animal life, exotic places, and the plant world too. With a keen sensibility for color and appropriate paint technique, most times he found his arena for personal expression in the flat mapspace of the canvas.
