Modernist Abstraction: In one way or another modernist abstraction was informed by the geometric and fractured images of Cubism originated by Picasso in the twentieth century. Abandoning perspective we see how the artist lets drawing, brush and color build a painting.
Edward Christiana [1912-1992] Edward Christiana was a modernist painter throughout mid-century interpreting ideas and observed subjects with free abstract expressionist handling of paint both in oil and watercolor.
Edward Christiana was a modernist painter throughout mid-century interpreting ideas and observed subjects with free abstract expressionist handling of paint both in oil and watercolor. Christiana’s energetic spirit is found in all his paintings during this part of his career from the 40s to the 70s. Evident bold brushwork and knifework build his pictorial structure with color both washed on thin and applied impasto thick. The dance of color, harmony and contrast, adds to the mood we experience in his paintings.
As a young man in the1930s Christiana was exposed to conventional art training at Pratt Institute, followed shortly after with several years in an experimental, unconventional and short-lived teaching program in the School of Related Arts and Sciences at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute in upstate NY where upon graduating he continued as a popular teacher until 1982. Throughout his long career Christiana was extremely productive, changing styles in the 70s to a more traditional regionalist style. Besides countless private collections, his work can be found at the Albany Institute of History and Science; and The Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, Columbus, Ohio; Currier Gallery of Art, Manchester, NH; The Everson Museum, Syracuse; the Munson Williams Proctor Museum of Art, Utica, NY; and the Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, MA.
